Select arrival by first and last base
Begin by placing the first accommodation on the map. Svolvær, Kabelvåg and Henningsvær are in the east; Leknes, Ballstad and Stamsund are more centrally located; Reine, Sørvågen and Å lie far to the west. An arrival that looks quick can add several extra hours when you add a bus, rental-car collection or ferry.
Plan departure day in reverse in the same way. If you leave early, spending the last night near the airport, ferry terminal or main transport connection is often safer than relying on a long morning journey. This matters especially in winter or when missing one departure would disrupt your whole journey.
Compare at least two complete travel chains. Note departure from home, expected check-in, number of independent tickets and what happens if the first part is delayed.
Evenes: many connections, but still outside Lofoten
Harstad/Narvik Airport, Evenes is a common choice for travelers to Lofoten. The advantage is the flight offer and access to a rental car or further transport. The disadvantage is that you are not yet in the island kingdom when the plane lands. Driving time varies with base, road, traffic and stop, and the public transport connection must suit the specific flight arrival.
Evenes is often most logical when the first base is Svolvær or Kabelvåg, or when you want to have a car throughout your stay. The first leg to Reine and Sørvågen will be long. Then you should compare a journey via Bodø and Moskenes before you decide.
Check the rental car's opening hours, late pick-up and conditions. By bus, you must use Avinor, Entur and the operator's updated information, not an older route time from a travel blog.
Svolvær and Leknes: shorter on the ground, more links in the air
Svolvær Airport is close to the eastern main base, while Leknes Airport is convenient for Vestvågøy, Ballstad and central Lofoten. The short transport after landing can be very valuable on a three-day trip, without a car or when arriving late.
The flight often goes via a hub and may have more stages than the journey to Evenes. Therefore, compare total time, baggage handling and how vulnerable the connection is. Tickets on one combined order normally provide different protection than two separate purchases; read the airline's terms and conditions.
Do not assume that a taxi is ready or that a rental car can be picked up around the clock. Clarify transport to the accommodation in advance, especially in the evening, winter weather or an address outside the city centre.
Bodø and Moskenes: a strong entrance to the west
The journey via Bodø can be suitable when the first base is Moskenesøya. Ferry to Moskenes places you close to Sørvågen, Reine, Hamnøy and Å, but sea conditions, capacity and timetable must be checked for the date. Set aside time between the flight or train and sea departure, and have a solution if an earlier stage is delayed.
If you are traveling by car on the ferry, you must understand booking, attendance and prioritization for the departure in question. As foot passengers, you must plan further transport from the ferry terminal. Accommodation with "Reine" in the name may still be too far away for a simple walk with luggage.
Bodø also connects with local flights and other boat services. Consider the whole day's itinerary: a hotel night in Bodø can provide a useful buffer instead of a very tight connection.
Drive to and through Lofoten
E10 is the main road, but parts of the journey are on narrow roads with passing places, towns, cyclists and changing weather. Calculate more time than a map service shows when you have to stop, eat or drive in the dark and winter driving. Passing places must be kept free, and a beautiful roadside is not automatically legal parking.
When entering from the north or east, the road section can be part of the holiday, but do not add a full day of activities after a long transport leg. In winter, you should check the National Roads Administration and danger warnings before departure, and be willing to postpone or split the leg.
One-way hire can save you a return trip, but is a commercial condition that must be confirmed with the lessor. Compare the total price with fees, fuel, tolls and alternative transport.
Check this before paying
- First and last overnight stay in relation to the point of arrival.
- Minimum connection times and whether all legs are on a single booking.
- Last bus, boat or ferry, and the car rental desk's closing time.
- Baggage rules at all stages, including boats and small planes.
- Arrival time, vehicle reservation and weather conditions on the ferry.
- Plan B and cost of lost connection.
Take a screenshot or save the tickets, but check operational messages on the day of travel. Schedule time is a prerequisite, not a guarantee against weather or technical incidents.
