Ballstad or Leknes?
Ballstad is right when the accommodation itself is to be part of the journey. Rorbuer, harbour, mountains and sea give more of a Lofoten feeling, and a kitchen makes several nights practical. The range of trade and public transport is smaller than in Leknes.
Leknes is a practical local centre with an airport, shops, groceries and services. It is not the obvious choice for harbour views, but can save time when arriving, shopping or moving between overnight stops.
There is usually no need to split your stay between the two, as they are in the same area. Stay in Ballstad and use Leknes for errands, or spend a night in Leknes before or after a flight.
Why a central base can beat a postcard setting
From Vestvågøy you can make days east towards Henningsvær and Kabelvåg or west towards Flakstad and Moskenes without starting in the wrong direction. It reduces repeated driving if the journey is to cover the whole of Lofoten.
Central location does not mean that all places are "close". Roads, traffic, photo stops and weather affect the day, and side roads to beaches and fishing villages take time. Choose one direction per day rather than commuting back and forth.
For a five-day trip, Ballstad/Leknes can be one of two bases. For a whole week, the area can be the middle base between Svolvær and Reine.
Beaches, Viking history and coastal tours
Vestvågøy gives access to Haukland, Uttakleiv, Unstad, Eggum and several trips, but these are in different directions and should not be treated as a quick stop. Choose a beach according to the wind and waves, and park only in designated places.
The Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg is a clear cultural anchor and a good alternative in unstable weather. Opening hours and program vary with the season. Farm sales, local producers and small catering establishments can be combined with one geographical route.
Ballstad has sea activities and mountains nearby. Use a local operator and up-to-date hiking source, and don't let the short distance to a trailhead replace consideration of weather and terrain.
Accommodation and room selection
Ballstad has lodges, traditional fishermen's cabins and other cabins, with considerable variation in kitchen equipment, views, size and comfort. Read the details of the actual unit: one property may offer modern suites, traditional rorbuer and larger houses under the same name.
Leknes offers more conventional hotels and can be convenient for early flights, short stays or reception services. Check how you will get to the airport: nearby does not always mean an easy walk with luggage.

Food, shopping and practical stops
Leknes is the easiest place for a larger grocery shop, pharmacies and practical errands. Shop before driving to your fishermen's cabin or further west. Ballstad has restaurants and a seafood tradition, but check availability and seasonal opening hours.
Plan important dinners, especially during busy periods. With a kitchen, you can combine a good restaurant meal with quiet evenings in the rorbua. Check what the kitchen actually contains before buying ingredients that require special equipment.

Three days from Ballstad or Leknes
Day 1 – Vestvågøy: choose Lofotr Viking Museum and one beach destination, or Ballstad and a local sea activity. Do not drive both north and south without reason.
Day 2 – west: choose Nusfjord, Ramberg or the Reine area. Limit yourself to two main stops and leave enough time for the return journey.
Day 3 – eastwards: Henningsvær, Gimsøy or Kabelvåg according to interest and weather. If you are flying from Leknes, keep the last part of the day closer to the airport.
