Gimsøy is a good choice for travelers whose main goal is horse riding, golf, Hoven, the beach or quiet coastal life. You avoid an early drive from Svolvær or Leknes and can spend bright evenings or dark autumn evenings close to the accommodation.
The place is less suitable as a sole base for many boat trips from Svolvær and daily excursions to Reine. Although the island is located between major destinations, side roads and weather create real transport time.
Choose accommodation according to dining options, kitchen facilities, parking and the location of your activity. An address on Gimsøy may still be far from Hov.
Hov collects the most accessible experiences
Visit Lofoten highlights Hov for riding with Icelandic horses, Lofoten Links, beach, sauna, camping, lodge and restaurant. Offers, times and season must be checked with the individual business.
Book riding according to experience, duration, age and clothing. Golf must be planned with starting time, equipment, wind and course rules. A midnight sun or northern lights experience can never be guaranteed by the activity.
If you are not on an organised activity, keep clear of horses, grazing animals and farm operations. Beaches and farm grounds are not unrestricted photo sets; respect access rules and working areas.
Hoven is a shorter summit hike, but still a mountain hike
Hoven offers a view of Gimsøy and the sea, but weather, wind, wet ground and visibility must be considered. Check the updated tour description and follow the existing path. Short length does not mean that wind or slippery terrain is harmless.
Plan enough light, clothes and return time. Summer's bright night does not reduce the need to be rested, and winter conditions can require completely different skills.
In bad weather, keeping safely back from the sea on a beach visit, using a sauna, eating out or choosing a booked indoor activity can be better than chasing a viewpoint.
The open north coast brings both light and exposure to the weather
Hov and the north coast are popular for the midnight sun and northern lights because the horizon can be open. Cloud cover, wind and terrain determine the experience. Northern lights require darkness and clear skies; activity or accommodation cannot promise that.
In strong winds, you must keep your distance from the sea, loose objects and exposed edges. Winter driving on smaller roads requires checking the weather and traffic information before you leave.
Show consideration for residents. Do not use private driveways or yards as a nighttime photo location.
A car is easiest; plan public transport to the exact address
The E10 crosses Gimsøy, but Hov and several accommodations are on side roads. A bus along the main road does not solve the final leg. Search address-to-address journeys in Entur and Reis Nordland.
Your activity provider may offer transport advice, but any pick-up must be confirmed in writing. Book taxis in advance. Cyclists should consider wind, tunnels, traffic and luggage.
Keep passing places clear when driving, and stop for photos only where parking is permitted.
Two nights on Gimsøy without overfilling the plan
Day 1: arrival, check-in and quiet time at Hov depending on the conditions. Eat on site or use your own kitchen. Day 2: choose horse riding or golf as your main activity and add Hoven or the beach only when energy and weather are suitable. Day 3: use morning and light before moving towards Svolvær, Henningsvær or Vestvågøy.
Gimsøy works well between two larger bases, but the stay should have its own value. Don't just use the island as a cheap bed for long day trips.
