Around the main square and harbour, you will find accommodation, places to eat, buses, express passenger boats and many activity providers close together. Still, check the exact address: some accommodation listed under “Svolvær” is outside the town centre.
Reine, Sørvågen and Moskenes: choose your base around transport connections
Reine offers scenery, places to eat and local activities, but accommodation can be spread out. Sørvågen is useful for exploring the west, while Moskenes is important if you arrive by ferry. Before booking, check the nearest stop, whether you can walk from it with your luggage, and how you will continue your journey on departure day.
Leknes: practical, but not necessarily the holiday atmosphere
Leknes has a local airport, shops and bus connections, making it a practical overnight stop or central base. Ballstad offers more of a seaside atmosphere within walking distance, but getting around by public transport is less straightforward.
How to plan flights, ferries and express passenger boats
If you arrive via Evenes, confirm your onward transport to Lofoten. Check what happens if your flight is delayed and whether your ticket or transport operator guarantees the connection. The local airports at Svolvær and Leknes are closer to places to stay, but getting there may require connecting flights.
Via Bodø, a ferry to Moskenes or other sea connections may be relevant. Routes and operators change, and weather can affect sea transport. Therefore, search for the actual date, do not base your plan on a blog with an old departure time. If a connection is essential for flying home, you should have a spacious buffer or travel closer to the point of departure the day before.
Baggage is a real part of the public transport plan. A half-hour walk can be easy in dry summer weather and demanding in wind, sleet or darkness. Check the surface, lighting and check-in time with the accommodation.

- Day 3 – Kabelvåg or Henningsvær: take the bus if the timetable works, or join an organised day trip. Do not try to fit in both places if that puts your return journey at risk.
- Day 4 – travel west: head to Reine, Sørvågen or Moskenes and keep the rest of your transfer day simple.
- Day 5 – explore the western islands: choose a fishing village, museum, short walk or activity with a realistic plan for getting back.
With only three days, stay in the east or west according to where you arrive. With a week, add an extra day in each location as a weather buffer. This is more worthwhile than squeezing in a third place to stay.
Choose activities by venue, not just product name
An activity description can say "Lofoten" even if the meeting place is far from the base. Before paying, you should check the map point, arrival time, actual end time, minimum age, clothing and whether transport is included. Ask the operator if the return trip depends on a bus or boat.
Sea and fjord experiences are often easiest from Svolvær. Photo and sightseeing tours can solve several of the out-of-the-way stops that a car-free traveler would otherwise not reach.
